Preparation for the First Speech Therapy Assessment

Preparation for the first speech therapy assessment can help reduce anxiety and allow you to make the most of your visit. The first speech therapy examination consists of an interview with parents or guardians, while the second part of the examination involves assessment of the child's communication-speech-language abilities.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for the first speech therapy assessment

Gather information

Gather all relevant information about the child prior to the assessment including pregnancy details, motor development, communication development (birth weight, birth height, APGAR), data on motor skills development, communication development and early speech-language development, interests and child play. If the child's development has been monitored by specialist doctors (pediatric neurologist, physiatrist, otolaryngologist, etc.), bring medical documentation and specialist reports. If the assessment is for a school-aged child with reading and writing disorders, bring school notebooks. This information can be valuable for the speech therapist to better understand the child's needs and lay the foundation for treatment based on the child's individual needs.

Prepare questions

Think about questions you may have regarding your child's speech and language development. Make a list of questions important to ask during the assessment in order to learn as much as you can about your child's daily activities.

Talk to your child

Depending on the child's age, you can explain to him that will see a speech therapist to get help with his speech and communication. If the child is older, you can ask them about their own challenges he is facing.

Be prepared to cooperate

The speech therapist may ask you to participate in the assessment or to provide additional information. Be prepared to collaborate and answer all questions.

Stay open and flexible: Keep in mind that the first assessment is an opportunity to better understand your child's needs and determine the best therapeutic approach.

Maintain a positive attitude

Show support and encourage your child throughout the entire process. Praise him for participating and expressing his thoughts and feelings.

Remember that every child is unique, so the first speech therapy assessment will be adjusted to his or her individual needs. It's important to collaborate with the speech therapist and be open to the recommendations in order to ensure the best possible experience for your child.
