Scientific Research
Throughout the hospital's history, especially in the last twenty years, great efforts have been made towards developing the scientific and teaching segments of work, as well as collaborations with several domestic and one foreign educational institutions initiated in the educational and practical areas.
Since 2007, the Hospital has served as a teaching base for the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka. In the following years, it also became a teaching base for the Faculty of Medicine of the “J. J. Strossmayer” University of Osijek, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Split, the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Rijeka, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Rijeka. By decision of the University Senate, in 2026 the Hospital was granted the status of an official teaching base of the University of Rijeka, thereby opening up opportunities for broader collaboration and interdisciplinary cooperation with all constituent units of the University.
The Hospital also collaborates with the Croatian Institute for Brain Research at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb; the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka; the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Zagreb; the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split; the Department of Psychology and the Translation Studies Programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka; and the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek.
Prof Vesna Šendula Jengić teaches various courses in the integrated undergraduate and graduate medical studies, as well as in the undergraduate and graduate university studies of Environmental and Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka, in the undergraduate specialist study of Nursing, and in the undergraduate specialist study of Physiotherapy at the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Rijeka. Along with Prof Šendula Jegić, the hospital's academic research team includes one assistant professor and one PhD. Conducting classes involves certain doctors, clinical psychologists, and nurses, who enrich the courses by sharing practical experiences from their daily work. A few hospital employees are co-authors of several university textbooks.
The hospital regularly hosts various lectures, workshops, conferences, and conventions of both national and international renown. Moreover, the hospital's employees regularly participate in domestic and foreign conventions, symposiums, and conferences with their professional and scientific papers, which are published in reputable domestic and foreign professional journals.
A specialized library, which features a collection of around 3000 books and 150 titles of different magazines and other periodicals in Croatian and other languages, is situated within the Scientific-Research and Collaborative-Educational Unit. The library is subscribed to a number of medical and non-medical journals and three specialized online databases.
Part of the library collection originates from the 1960s, when the specialized library was first established. At the time, the library was subscribed to about ten domestic and foreign professional journals, and patients were regularly supplied with the daily press. However, the specialized library was mostly equipped in the period after 2008, when a librarian was employed, and the patient library was separated, offering a large number of fictional works and daily publications.
